Send money from Japan to Vietnam: fees, dong or dollars, and what arrives
From Japan you can send to Vietnam as a bank deposit, cash pickup or home delivery. The fixed fee for ¥50,000 is ¥460 at SBI Remit and KYODAI and ¥1,000 at DCOM, before each company’s exchange-rate margin. What arrives differs: SBI Remit pays a dong account at any bank in Vietnam, or US dollars in cash, while DCOM can also pay yen, but only to some banks and for ¥2,500 more. Vietnam’s tax law lists remittance income as exempt.

How can my family receive money from Japan in Vietnam?
Four ways: a bank deposit, cash at a pickup location, an e-wallet or delivery to the home. Which one you can use depends on the company. The main send-money guide lists every company, the My Number rule and the ID each company accepts. This page covers the Vietnam side.
- Bank account
-
SBI Remit pays dong into any bank in Vietnam. Only a dong account works, and you give the bank name, recipient name and account number exactly (SBI Remit). Wise, KYODAI, DCOM and Remitly list bank accounts too (main guide).
- Cash pickup
-
SBI Remit pays cash in US dollars at MoneyGram partner stores. It says about 10 minutes, and some transfers take hours to 2 days. The recipient needs no bank account (SBI Remit). KYODAI, DCOM and Remitly list cash pickup too.
- E-wallet
-
KYODAI and Remitly list an e-wallet or mobile wallet. KYODAI’s e-wallet fee bands stop at ¥280,000 (KYODAI). The pages we read do not name the wallets.
- Home delivery
-
DCOM and Remitly list delivery to the recipient’s home. DCOM’s fee for Vietnam covers bank, cash and home delivery (DCOM).
DCOM’s fee includes the cost of withdrawing the money, so the recipient normally pays nothing in Vietnam, but a bank that is not one of DCOM’s designated ones may charge (DCOM). We did not find a receiving fee stated on the other companies’ pages.
What is the fee for sending money to Vietnam?
The fixed fee runs from ¥400 to ¥1,760, depending on the company and the amount, before any exchange-rate margin. These three companies publish a fee for each amount, and the table shows six of them. Providers are listed in a fixed order, not ranked.
| You send | SBI Remit | KYODAI Remittance | DCOM |
|---|---|---|---|
| ¥10,000 | ¥460 | ¥460 | ¥400 |
| ¥30,000 | ¥460 | ¥460 | ¥400 |
| ¥50,000 | ¥460 | ¥460 | ¥1,000 |
| ¥100,000 | ¥760 | ¥760 | ¥1,000 |
| ¥300,000 | ¥980 | ¥980 | ¥1,750 |
| ¥500,000 | ¥1,760 | ¥1,750 | ¥1,750 |
Dong deposit, US dollar cash pickup and home delivery, as each company lists them. Sources: SBI Remit, KYODAI Remittance, DCOM, read October 3, 2026. DCOM’s table also covers Indonesia, and its yen transfers to Vietnam cost ¥2,500 more. SBI Remit charges more for a bank account in dollars, euros, pounds or yen. The fee is only part of the cost: most companies also add to the exchange rate, and none of these publishes how much. Wise, Remitly, Instarem, Smiles and Western Union do not publish a fixed fee table we could confirm, so check the amount in their apps. The main guide compares the ¥50,000 fee for every company.
For scale, the World Bank put the average total cost, fee and exchange margin together, of sending $200 from Japan at 7.56% in the third quarter of 2024, against a global goal of 3% (World Bank, Remittance Prices Worldwide). That is Japan to all destinations, two years old, and not this corridor.
Will my family in Vietnam receive dong, dollars or yen?
It depends on the company and the method. The table sets out what each says.
| Company | Dong | US dollars | Yen |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBI Remit | Bank account, at any bank in Vietnam (source) | Cash pickup (source) | Not listed |
| DCOM | Dong, yen or US dollars, by bank account, cash pickup or home delivery. Yen reach only some banks and cost ¥2,500 more (country list, fee page). It does not say which method pays which currency. | ||
| KYODAI, Remitly, Wise, Instarem, Smiles | Not stated on the pages we read. The app shows what arrives before you pay. | ||
“Not listed” and “Not stated” mean the page does not say, not that the option is missing.
What happens if I cancel a transfer to Vietnam?
You lose the fee. SBI Remit says that if a transfer is canceled, or the money comes back because of an error, the transfer fee is not returned and a ¥1,000 recall fee applies (SBI Remit). DCOM says it does not refund its fee when a transfer is canceled (DCOM). Check the bank name, account name and account number before you confirm. For SBI Remit, a dong account is the only kind of bank account that works.
Is money I send from Japan taxed in Vietnam?
Vietnam’s Law on Personal Income Tax, Law 109/2025/QH15, lists income from remittances (kiều hối) among exempt income in Article 4. It has been in force since 1 July 2026 (Vietnamese government document portal, PDF). The clause does not define who counts as a remitter, and we did not check the rules that do, so ask a tax adviser if the amounts are large.
In Japan, a bank or transfer company reports each overseas transfer of more than ¥1,000,000 to the tax office, and every sender gives a My Number: see the main guide.
Which companies have Vietnamese help?
SBI Remit’s and KYODAI’s websites have a Vietnamese menu (SBI Remit, KYODAI). SBI Remit also says staff from Southeast Asian countries answer in their own languages (SBI Remit). Seven Bank’s app is in 9 languages including Vietnamese (Seven Bank), and Western Union’s website is in Vietnamese (Western Union). We did not check how much of each site or app is translated, and the Vietnam payout details above come from the Japanese pages.
A residence card issued from 14 June 2026 is refused by some sign-ups: see the residence card verification tracker and the main guide.
