How to send money home from Japan: fees, ID and what arrives

Register once with a bank or money transfer company, show your residence card and give your My Number, which Japanese law requires for every overseas transfer. Before you pay, compare the amount that arrives in each company’s app: the fee is only part of the cost, because most companies also add to the exchange rate.

My Number required by law for every senderAmount received the figure to compare, not the fee

Revolut’s figure is its free plan; it adds an exchange fee at weekends and above ¥300,000 a month. “Other countries” is the range across every other country on the company’s fee page. Wise, Remitly and the others do not publish a fixed fee we could confirm, so check the amount in their app. A fee does not include what the company adds to the exchange rate: compare what arrives before you pay.

Where are you sending money?

Why every company asks for your My Number

Japan’s overseas remittance law makes every sender give the bank or transfer company a notice with their name, address and My Number (個人番号, Article 3). No company here can send your money without it.

You do not always need the plastic My Number Card. SBI Remit accepts a copy of both sides of the card or a resident record (住民票) that shows the number, issued within 3 months. Wise accepts a My Number document with your residence card. Remitly requires the My Number Card itself.

The specified residence card (特定在留カード) issued from 14 June 2026 works as a My Number Card, and getting one is optional (Immigration Services Agency).

Your first transfer, step by step

  1. Pick a company that pays out the way the money should arrive: a bank account, cash pickup or an e-wallet. The country sections below list who offers what.
  2. Register in its app or on its website with your residence card and your My Number. Your name, date of birth and address must match on every document.
  3. Wait for the ID check. An app check can be quick; SBI Remit posts a welcome pack to your address, which takes about a week.
  4. Add the recipient: bank name and account number, or the full name on their ID for cash pickup.
  5. Pay by bank transfer, card, ATM or convenience store, depending on the company, and keep the receipt number for your family.

Sending money from Japan to other countries

These companies name the country on their own pages. A company marked “Checking” may still send there: its page did not confirm it. For any other country, check the company’s own list: Wise, Remitly, SBI Remit and DCOM.

What goes wrong with a first transfer

A residence card issued from 14 June 2026. Japan Post Bank’s apps cannot read it for the ID check for now, and Seven Bank has stopped opening accounts with it. The residence card verification tracker lists every sign-up that refuses the new card.

Names that do not match. Wise requires the same name, date of birth and address on your ID, your My Number document and your profile. SBI Remit may ask for your passport if your residence card shows your name in kanji.

No Japanese bank account yet. Wise, Instarem and Japan Post Bank take money from a bank account; DCOM and SBI Remit take cash at an ATM or convenience store. The bank account guide explains which bank opens an account for a new arrival.

Leaving Japan for good. If you paid into the Japanese pension, part of it may be refundable after you leave: see the pension refund guide.

Sending money from Japan: FAQ

Do I need a My Number to send money abroad from Japan?

Yes. The overseas remittance law requires your name, address and My Number on a notice to the bank or transfer company. You do not always need the plastic My Number Card: SBI Remit and Wise also take a resident record (住民票) that shows the number.

What is the cheapest way to send money from Japan?

We cannot say for every amount, because most providers do not publish how much they add to the exchange rate. For the fixed fee on ¥50,000, the lowest published figures are ¥460 to Vietnam, ¥800 to Brazil, ¥880 to Indonesia and ¥1,000 to the Philippines.

How long does a transfer from Japan take?

Minutes for cash pickup with SBI Remit or Seven Bank, and within seconds for most Wise transfers, the companies say. Instarem says 1 to 2 business days, and Japan Post Bank warns its checks can take more than a month.

Can I send money with the new residence card issued from June 2026?

Not through Japan Post Bank’s apps or a new Seven Bank account for now. Smiles lists the new card and the specified residence card as accepted ID. The other providers here have not said.

Can I send money from Japan to my own bank account in the US or UK?

Yes, with Wise: it says you can send to your own bank account, and it pays into bank accounts in both countries. You still register with your residence card and My Number. A financial institution reports each overseas transfer of more than ¥1,000,000 to the tax office.

How much can I send from Japan at once?

Up to ¥1,000,000 per transfer at SBI Remit, Remitly, Instarem and Western Union, and under ¥1,000,000 at Japan Post Bank. KYODAI allows ¥1,000,000 a day, fee included. Wise allows up to ¥150,000,000 when you pay by bank transfer or card, and ¥1,000,000 when you pay from your Wise balance.
